The film portrays love as a beautiful love poem that revolves around a mere pink tree, a combination of love, anticipation, pain, suffering and loss.

Yathra was the second Malayalam film directed by Balu Mahendra after Olangal. Yatra was released on September 20, 1985 in 13 centers in Kerala. Completed up to 48 days in all centers released, 9 centers in 50 days, 75 days in 3 centers and 100 days in 1 center. Apart from Kerala, Coimbatore was also screened for more than 50 days. Yatra progressed in the theater by breaking collection records. There was a huge rush in the BC centers

Yathra won the Kerala State Award for Best film in 1985, Balu Mahendra won the Filmfare Award for Best Director and Mammootty won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor and the Special Jury State Award for his performance in the film.
