It has been 23 years since we were amazed by Mammootty's strong character as Chandychayan in the first film directed by Lal Jose and scripted by Sreenivasan.! Apart from Mammootty, Biju Menon, Mohini, Divya Unni, Kalabhavan Mani, Sreenivasan, Sukumari and Nedumudi Venu also starred in the film.
The movie was released on April 8, 1998 as Vishu. Kanmadam, Kaikudanna Nilav, Srikrishnapuram Nakshatra Thilakkam and Daya were also released. Also, Mammootty's The Truth, which was released a week ago, was in theaters. Maravathoor Kanavu became the Vishu winner beating other films
The film was screened in 4 centers in Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam and Kollam for 100 days.
Maravathoor Kanavu was scripted by Sreenivasan with Jayaram in the lead. Jayaram did not show much interest in the film, perhaps because Lal Jose was the new director at the time. Then he tells the story to Mammootty. Mammootty, who loved listening to the story, told Lal Jose, "If you tell me when the film will start, you have given me a date."
